In the madness of moving it’s easy to overlook the essentials. There are items you don’t want hidden at the bottom of a box, or still in the moving truck on the big day. From pet food to toilet paper, we’ve put together a checklist to make your move as streamlined as possible.

Be prepared

  • Important paperwork
This could include ID to collect your keys from estate agents, removal company details and a list of what you plan to do as soon as you arrive.

  • The house keys

  • First aid box

  • A basic tool kit
Having things like screwdrivers, allen keys and a hammer to hand will help you put together key furniture and resolve any issues like exposed nails and screws.

  • Scissors or a craft knife

  • A torch

Top tip: Save your moving boxes for when you’re ready to paint. By flattening them, you can use the boxes to protect the floor.

Clean and tidy

  • All-purpose cleaner and cloths

  • Dishcloth and washing-up liquid

  • Bin bags

  • A dust pan and broom

Top tip: Brushing your walls with a broom is a great way to remove dust and prepare it for wiping down before decorating.

Home comforts

  • Food and drink

Be prepared to keep everyone going with snacks, tea, coffee and meals that are quick and easy to make.

  • Kitchenware and utensils

Keep a set of plates, cutlery and cups for each person. A couple of pots and pans might come in handy too.

  • Phone chargers

  • Toilet paper

  • Overnight bag
Pack a spare change of clothes, your toiletries, and a towel.

  • Pillows, bedding or sleeping bags

  • Children’s entertainment – Toys, an iPad with a movie or colouring books.

  • Pet food and dish

Top tip: If you’re in need of some time out while moving, why not sit back, have a tea or coffee and use the Visualizer app to reimagine your new walls in your favourite colours.
