Have you ever wondered why Chinese children collect red envelopes bulging with money on Chinese New Year? Red is the colour of luck for the Chinese, signifying joy, prosperity and success and, during the New Year, can be seen in fiery, audacious shades everywhere you look. Red lanterns symbolising reunion and harmony are a popular welcome sign, red firecrackers make an auspicious (and ear-splitting) start to the New Year and a red front door means both luck and happiness.

If you need a touch of luck, you could paint your own front door a rich shade of scarlet or brighten your hall with juicy cherry tones. You just never know what good fortune it might bring…
